What is Tally on Cloud? A plain-English guide for Indian businesses

Tally on Cloud is not a new version of Tally. It is the same TallyPrime you already use, running on a Windows server in a data centre, opened from any screen you own. This guide explains how it works, whether Tally can run in a browser, what it costs and where it falls short.

  • Same TallyPrime, same licence
  • Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android & PC
  • Daily automated backups
  • Starting from ₹799/month

What is Tally on Cloud? The one-paragraph answer

Quick answer

Tally on Cloud means your licensed TallyPrime runs on a Windows server in a data centre instead of your office PC. You open it over the internet with a Remote Desktop app on a Mac, Windows PC, iPhone, iPad, Android or Chromebook. Same software, same licence; the data stays on the server and everyone works on one live copy.

  • Software: TallyPrime for Windows
  • Runs on: a Windows server in a data centre
  • You connect with: Windows App or Remote Desktop
  • Licence: your own, plus Tally Virtual Users
  • Data: stays on the server

Think of it as moving the office computer that runs Tally into a secure data centre, keeping it on all day, and giving each person a window into it. That is how TallyoCloud runs Tally on Cloud for Indian businesses.

A Windows desktop app

Why TallyPrime can't simply be "online"

TallyPrime is desktop software. It installs on one Windows computer and keeps each company's data in folders on that computer's disk.

Tally Solutions' recommended system configuration (last updated 22 September 2026) asks for 64-bit Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 or later, including Windows 11, and says TallyPrime can currently be installed only on Microsoft Windows. There is no TallyPrime app for macOS, iPhone, iPad, Android, Linux or ChromeOS, and no web-app edition you sign in to like Gmail. Even Tally's own browser option, covered below, runs the Windows program on a hosted computer and streams it to you.

So "Tally on Cloud" never means a rewritten website. It means moving the Windows computer that runs TallyPrime into a data centre, keeping it switched on and connected, and letting you reach it from any device. The software, the shortcuts and the Gateway of Tally are exactly what you know, because they are the same program.

Tally online & in a browser

Can you use Tally in a browser or online?

Yes and no. You can view Tally reports in a browser, and you can run the full TallyPrime online through a hosted server, but there is no TallyPrime website to log in to. Three different things hide behind "Tally in browser".

Why Remote Desktop hosts use an app, not a browser tab

Microsoft's browser version of Windows App connects only to Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365 and Dev Box; it cannot open a Remote Desktop Services server. To offer a browser login, a host has to deploy Microsoft's Remote Desktop web client, which needs an RD Gateway, a Connection Broker and RD Web Access. TallyoCloud connects you through the free Windows App on Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android and Chromebook, and the Remote Desktop Connection already built into Windows.

What RDP means for Tally

Is TallyPrime online or offline?

Offline first, with online services on top. Voucher entry, ledgers and reports work without internet on the computer where TallyPrime is installed. Connected services, including GST return filing, e-invoices, e-way bills, Connected Banking, WhatsApp sharing and TallyDrive backups, need internet and an active TSS. The licence itself must reach the internet at least once every 30 days or TallyPrime falls back to Educational mode. A cloud server stays connected, so those services are reachable whenever you are.

Is Tally available on cloud at all? Yes, in two forms: Tally Solutions' own TallyPrime Cloud Access, and independent hosts such as TallyoCloud that run your own licence on a Windows server. TallyPrime has no web-app edition as of October 2026, so every "Tally online" option is one of the routes compared on this page.

How it works

How Tally on Cloud works: keystrokes out, pixels back

Remote Desktop never sends your company file across the internet. It sends what you type and click to the server, and the server sends back the parts of the screen that changed. Switch the tabs to see how Tally's own remote options differ.

  • Out: keystrokes and clicks
  • Back: screen updates (pixels)
  • Stays put: your company data

What you do on an office PC: vouchers, GST, reports, backups and add-ons; printing (PDF on phones)
What you need
Your licence (remote users count as Tally Virtual Users), internet and the free Windows App

What happens when you press F8 for a sales voucher

  1. Windows App on your Mac, phone or PC sends the keystroke over an encrypted connection.
  2. The connection is checked (your password and a one-time code) and reaches your company's own Windows server.
  3. TallyPrime on the server opens the Sales voucher, reading ledgers and stock items from the company data on the server's disk.
  4. The server sends back only the part of the screen that changed.
  5. Your device draws it. This round trip repeats for every key, which is why a steady connection matters more than a fast one.

Why "pixels, not data" matters

  • Big company files don't clog the link. Years of vouchers stay on the server; only the screen crosses the internet.
  • Everyone sees one live company. There is no copy on each laptop to merge, sync or overwrite.
  • A lost laptop isn't lost books. The company data is not stored on the device you work from.
  • Modest devices are enough. The server does the processing, so an 8 GB MacBook Air or an iPad only has to show the screen.

Getting started takes four steps; see how to use Tally on Cloud. For the protocol itself, read Tally on Windows Remote Desktop (RDP).

Need only reports, on Windows PCs?

Tally.NET Remote Access or Reports in Browser may be enough, especially for a CA who reviews but rarely posts. Both are free with an active TSS.

Want Tally to run it?

TallyPrime Cloud Access is a fair choice at the lowest per-user price if your team works from Windows or a browser and doesn't need phones, tablets or Excel on the server.

Need Mac, mobile or add-ons?

A hosted Windows server fits when people work on a MacBook, iPad or Android phone, print locally from a Mac, or rely on third-party add-ons.

Our Tally remote access guide compares setup and running costs for every option, and TallyPrime Cloud Access vs Tally on Cloud goes line by line. IT teams who would rather build their own server can read Tally on AWS, Azure and Oracle.

Difference between Tally and Tally Cloud

Advantages

What you gain from Tally on Cloud

What changes for an owner, an accountant and a CA once the office PC is no longer the only place Tally lives.

Work from anywhere, on the same live books

The owner checks outstandings from home, the accountant posts vouchers from the office and the CA reviews entries from their own firm, all inside one company file at the same time. No pen drives, no emailed backups, no "which copy is latest?"

Multi-user and branches

TallyPrime on a Mac

Open TallyPrime in Windows App on a MacBook, iMac or Mac mini, with no Parallels or Windows licence on the Mac.

Tally on Mac

Phones and tablets

The full TallyPrime, not a viewer, on iPhone, iPad and Android. Best on a tablet with a keyboard.

Tally on mobile

No server room

No ageing PC under the desk, no UPS and no weekend IT visits. The server is patched and watched for you, with a 99.9% uptime target in our SLA.

Backups you don't have to remember

Daily automated backups with 30-day retention, kept away from the server and in India, where company law and, from 1 April 2026, Income-tax Rule 46(8) require daily backups of electronic books.

How the data is protected

Connected services stay connected

GST filing, e-invoices, e-way bills and Connected Banking run on a server that stays switched on and connected, as long as your TSS is active. Month-end and GST deadline nights no longer depend on one office PC being switched on.

Your TDLs and add-ons come along

It is Windows, so TDL customisations and vetted third-party add-ons run as they do on your PC. Exports to Excel and PDF can be saved straight to your own computer.

Honest limits: the disadvantages of Tally on Cloud

Cloud solves location and upkeep. It doesn't make every problem disappear, and you should know the trade-offs before you move.

  • Internet is not optional. If your connection drops, you can't open TallyPrime until it's back. Keep a phone hotspot as a fallback; our internet speed guide explains what is enough.
  • Phones can't print directly. Windows App on iPhone, iPad and Android doesn't redirect printers, so you export a PDF and print or share it. Windows and Mac print to local printers (Mac through a generic driver). See how to print from Tally cloud.
  • USB devices need care. DSC tokens, barcode scanners and dot-matrix or receipt printers plugged into your device need the right redirection and should be tested first. Read the DSC token guide.
  • It's a recurring cost. You swap a one-time PC purchase for a monthly fee, on top of your TallyPrime licence and TSS.
  • Distance shows up as lag. Every keystroke makes a round trip. A server in India keeps the distance short, but a weak mobile signal will still make typing feel slow.
  • Licence rules still apply. A Silver licence covers one remote user at a time. More people working together need Gold or extra Tally Virtual Users.
  • Excel lives on your device. Microsoft Office on a hosted server needs separate licensing, so most people export to Excel or PDF and open the file on their own computer.

When a local PC is still the better choice

Cloud is probably not worth it for you if:

  • One person uses Tally on one Windows PC and never works away from that desk.
  • Your office internet is unreliable and you have no backup connection.
  • Your daily work depends on USB hardware you can't test over Remote Desktop.
  • You already have an IT team running a LAN server you're happy with, and nobody needs remote access.

Not sure? Run your own company on a cloud server for 7 days before deciding.

Keep the server in India. Tally's licensing best practices say a licence must be hosted and used within the region it was bought for during most (75%) of its use. An India licence belongs on an Indian server; TallyoCloud servers are hosted in Mumbai, India.

FAQ

Tally on Cloud questions, answered

What is Tally on Cloud?

Tally on Cloud is TallyPrime installed on a Windows server in a data centre instead of on your office computer. You connect over the internet with a Remote Desktop app such as Microsoft's free Windows App and work exactly as on a PC, with the same shortcuts, reports and GST features. Your company data stays on the server, so several users can work on the same company from anywhere.

Is TallyPrime cloud based or online software?

No. TallyPrime is a Windows desktop application that keeps company data on the computer where it is installed, and day-to-day accounting works offline. Its connected services, such as GST filing, e-invoicing, e-way bills and Connected Banking, need internet and an active TSS. To use TallyPrime like cloud software, you run it on a cloud server, either with Tally's own TallyPrime Cloud Access or an independent host.

Can I use TallyPrime in a web browser?

Partly. Tally's Reports in Browser lets you view and download reports and vouchers with an active TSS, but not post entries. Tally's own TallyPrime Cloud Access opens the full software in a browser, though browser printing is PDF-only and phones and tablets are not supported. Remote Desktop hosts like TallyoCloud connect through Microsoft's free Windows App unless they deploy a browser gateway.

What is the difference between Tally and Tally on Cloud?

The software is the same TallyPrime with the same licence. The difference is where it runs: on your own PC, or on a server in a data centre that you open remotely. Cloud adds access from Mac, mobile and any PC, one central company file for many users and managed backups, but it needs an internet connection and a monthly fee.

Does Tally Solutions have its own cloud version?

Yes. Tally Solutions sells TallyPrime Cloud Access, which runs TallyPrime on virtual computers in Oracle Cloud from ₹600 per user per month plus GST, with your licence bought separately. Its FAQ says it runs on Linux through a WINE layer and does not support phones or tablets. Independent hosts such as TallyoCloud run TallyPrime on Windows Server instead, reachable from Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android.

Is Tally on Cloud legal?

Yes, when it is licensed properly. Tally's licensing guidance allows you to host your own TallyPrime licence on a cloud server for your own business, and remote sessions are covered by Tally Virtual Users: Silver includes 1, Gold includes 10. One licence cannot be shared across different businesses. The hosting provider must also license Microsoft Remote Desktop access for every user.

Do I need a new TallyPrime licence to use the cloud?

No. You can move your existing Silver or Gold licence to your cloud server; reactivating it there releases it from your old PC. What changes is how remote users are counted: each remote session uses one Tally Virtual User. Silver includes one and Gold includes ten, and Gold customers can add more at ₹125 per user per month plus tax, billed annually.

Tally cloud kya hai?

Tally cloud ka matlab hai ki aapka licensed TallyPrime office ke computer ki jagah data centre ke Windows server par chalta hai. Aap MacBook, mobile, iPad ya kisi bhi PC se Windows App ke through login karke wahi Tally chalate hain, same shortcuts aur same reports ke saath. Data server par rehta hai, isliye poori team ek hi company par kaam kar sakti hai. Poori Hindi guide hamare blog par hai.
