A Tally Virtual User (TVU) is Tally's licence unit for TallyPrime opened through Remote Desktop, a thin client, Citrix or a cloud server. Each open TallyPrime instance uses one TVU. Silver includes 1 and Gold includes 10 for the licence's lifetime, and Gold owners can add packs at ₹125 per user per month plus tax, billed annually.

What is a Tally Virtual User (TVU)?
TallyPrime's licences were designed around computers. Silver activates on a single computer, and Gold lets unlimited users share the licence across computers on a local area network (LAN), according to Tally's TallyPrime FAQ. Remote Desktop changes the picture. TallyPrime runs on one Windows machine, and people anywhere see it and drive it through a remote session. Tally's answer to that is the Tally Virtual User.
In Tally's TVU FAQ, a TVU is one instance of TallyPrime running in, or reached through, a virtualised environment. Its examples are Windows Remote Desktop (RDP), a Windows thin client, Citrix and cloud. The same FAQ confirms that TallyPrime hosted on a cloud such as AWS or Azure and reached through virtualisation counts as TVU usage. So whenever you use Tally on Cloud, on a server you built yourself or one run by a host such as TallyoCloud, you are using TVUs. In short, a Tally TVU is counted per TallyPrime instance, and TVU in TallyPrime works the same way whichever cloud or server you choose.
The Tally virtual user limit simply means the number of TVU packs attached to your licence serial number. It is the maximum number of TallyPrime instances that can be open over virtual sessions at the same moment. It's a concurrency limit, not a cap on accounts. You can create as many Windows logins as you like, but only that many TallyPrime instances can run at once.
TVU is a licensing rule, not a feature you switch on. Tally's FAQ says it doesn't change how your TDL customisations behave, and the user rights you set inside TallyPrime apply to each virtual user as usual. It's still worth asking your TDL developer whether a customisation has been checked on Remote Desktop.
Free TVUs: how many come with Silver and Gold
You don't pay for the first few. Tally includes free TVU packs with every licence, and its FAQ says they stay free for TallyPrime's product life cycle. Rental licences get the same number for as long as the rental is valid.
| Licence | Free TVUs | Can you add more? |
|---|---|---|
| TallyPrime Silver ₹22,500 one-time | 1 | No Tally asks Silver owners to convert to Gold first |
| TallyPrime Gold ₹67,500 one-time | 10 | Yes Up to 999 extra packs |
| Silver or Gold rental ₹750 or ₹2,250 a month | 1 or 10 | Same as the licence type, while the rental is valid |
| Tally.Server 9 | 20 | Extra packs are covered separately in Tally's FAQ |
Free packs per Tally's TVU FAQ; licence prices from Tally's customer hub, excluding 18% GST.
Two details catch people out. First, the free packs belong to the licence serial number, not to a person or a computer. Second, Silver is a single-user product: its one TVU covers one TallyPrime instance at a time, and you can't buy extra packs for it. The only way up is the Silver-to-Gold upgrade, which Tally's customer hub lists at ₹45,000 plus GST. Our TallyPrime price guide covers licences, rentals and TSS renewals in full.
How Tally counts TVUs: instances, not people
Tally counts open TallyPrime instances, not people or logins. Its FAQ gives a blunt example: if one user opens 10 instances of Tally with their login, all 10 TVU packs on a Gold licence are used up. Nobody else can then open TallyPrime over Remote Desktop until something closes.
The "10 windows" trap
On a server it's tempting to open a second TallyPrime to look at another company, or to leave a long report running while you post vouchers in a fresh window. Each one is a new instance and a new TVU. You rarely need it. TallyPrime can keep several companies open in one instance: Alt+F3 opens another company and F3 switches between the open ones, as listed in Tally's keyboard shortcuts.
What uses a TVU, and what doesn't
| How TallyPrime is opened | Uses TVUs? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Installed on office PCs on the licence's LAN | No TVU | Tally says users on computers within a LAN are outside TVU |
| Remote Desktop to a cloud or office server | 1 TVU per instance | Any virtual technology, inside or outside the LAN, falls under TVU |
| Windows thin client or Citrix | Yes | Named by Tally as virtualisation tools |
| VPN into the office, then Remote Desktop | Yes | RDP is still the access method |
| VPN only, TallyPrime on your own PC | No TVU, with a caveat | The TVU FAQ treats VPN as an extension of the LAN, but Tally's licensing FAQ says TallyPrime is designed for LAN use and points remote users to TVU |
| AnyDesk-style screen sharing of an office PC | No TVU impact | You're viewing a PC that already runs TallyPrime; one person at a time |
| Tally.NET Remote Access, reports in a browser | Not part of TVU | These come with an active TSS subscription |
Closing the window isn't signing out
When you close the Remote Desktop window, Windows only disconnects you. Your session, and the TallyPrime inside it, keeps running on the server, so that instance keeps holding its TVU. Tally's performance checklist recommends logging off rather than disconnecting. On TallyoCloud servers, idle sessions are disconnected and disconnected sessions are logged off after a set time; our Tally RDP set-up explains the policy.
Do you need a special Tally licence for RDP?
No. People search for a "Tally RDP license", but Tally doesn't sell one. Your normal Silver or Gold licence covers Remote Desktop and cloud use, provided it has enough TVUs for the instances you open at the same time. Tally's FAQ is plain about it: as a customer, you can host TallyPrime on a cloud as your business needs, and the free TVU packs give you access from anywhere. That's true whether the server is on AWS, Azure or Oracle Cloud, in your office, or with a managed host.
Two other rules decide whether the set-up is compliant:
- Licence and data on the same machine. Tally's FAQ says the company data and the TallyPrime licence can't sit in separate virtual machines. On a server, TallyPrime, your licence and your company data live together.
- Microsoft's licence for each user. This one is Microsoft's rule, not Tally's: every user who connects to a Remote Desktop Services session host needs a Remote Desktop client access licence. A hosting provider buys these for you, which is one reason hosting is priced per user.
How to use Tally Virtual Users, step by step
- Install TallyPrime on the Windows server or VM that holds your company data.
- Activate your licence there, or move it from your PC. TallyPrime's Reactivate License option surrenders it from the old computer automatically. Our data migration guide walks through the move.
- Create one Windows login per person, so every session, and every TVU, traces back to someone.
- Connect and open TallyPrime once. Use Remote Desktop Connection on Windows, or Microsoft's free Windows App on a Mac, iPhone, iPad or Android phone.
- Set each person's rights inside TallyPrime under Users and Passwords, so a data-entry operator doesn't see everything the owner does.
Buying more TVU packs: price and volume slabs
Gold owners who need more than 10 TallyPrime instances open at once buy extra TVU packs from Tally. The Tally virtual user price in India is ₹125 per user per month plus tax, billed annually, which works out to ₹1,500 per pack per year. Volume slabs bring that down:
| Extra packs | Discount | Per pack a month | Per pack a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | List price | ₹125 | ₹1,500 |
| 5 to 14 | 10% | ₹113 | ₹1,350 |
| 15 to 24 | 15% | ₹106 | ₹1,275 |
| 25 to 99 | 20% | ₹100 | ₹1,200 |
| 100 or more | 25% | ₹94 | ₹1,125 |
India prices from Tally's TVU FAQ, plus GST. Tally's cart confirms the final figure.
How to buy extra packs
- Log in with your Tally account ID at tallysolutions.com.
- Open Control Centre › Account Management › License Management.
- Select your licence and click the TVU count shown against it.
- Click Buy More and choose the number of packs.
Your first pack runs for 12 months from purchase, not counting the month you buy it. Packs you add later end on the same date and are charged pro-rata. A Gold licence can carry up to 999 extra packs. Tally offers no auditor discount on TVUs, and an Indian licence always uses India-priced packs, even when someone opens it from abroad.
Check the price before you budget. One answer in Tally's TVU FAQ still mentions an older introductory price of ₹100 a month. The current list price on the same page is ₹125, so confirm the figure in Control Centre before you plan around it.
Remember what the pack pays for. Tally's FAQ says the TVU price covers only the licence; infrastructure and deployment are separate. That means the server, Microsoft's Remote Desktop licences, backups and support, which is what you pay a host for. Our Tally on Cloud pricing starts with a private server from ₹799 a month plus GST.

TVU vs TSS vs Tally.NET Remote Access
Three Tally terms get mixed up constantly. A TVU is a licence entitlement. TSS (Tally Software Services) is the yearly subscription for upgrades and connected services. Remote Access is a TSS feature that lets TallyPrime on another computer open company data on your office machine. Here's how they differ:
| TVU | TSS | Tally.NET Remote Access | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Needs active TSS? | No | It is the subscription | Yes |
| Users included | Silver 1, Gold 10 | Not user-based | Silver 1, Gold 10, Tally.Server 9: 50 at once |
| Where TallyPrime runs | On the server; you see it remotely | Wherever it's installed | On each remote user's own PC; the office computer must stay on with the company open |
| From Mac, iPhone or Android | Yes, via a Remote Desktop app | Not applicable | Needs TallyPrime, which is Windows-only |
| Price (ex-GST) | Extra packs from ₹125 a month, billed yearly | Silver ₹4,500 a year, Gold ₹13,500 a year | Included in TSS |

The practical point: TVU has no dependency on TSS, so if your TSS lapses, your TVUs and your cloud set-up keep working. What you lose is upgrades, connected e-invoicing and e-way bills, and Remote Access, which is why most businesses keep TSS active anyway. The same-company rule: one licence, one business
This is the rule that separates honest Tally cloud hosting from risky hosting. Tally's TVU FAQ answers a question about service providers directly. Giving users RDP access to one licence is fine when they all belong to the same company, but if they belong to different companies, "it is a violation". Every company needs its own TallyPrime licence and its own TVU packs.
Tally's licensing best practices page, updated 11 June 2026, goes further. Each licence is tied to a single legal business entity, and sharing it across entities is treated as "misuse". Cloud hosting may share one licence across branches of the same entity, never across different entities. TVUs are meant for remote working by that entity's own users, and the page lists cloud-hosted access for external clients as misuse. The TVU FAQ even rules out an association buying one Gold licence for its members, because an association isn't a company.
Geography counts too. The same page says a licence must be hosted and used in the region it was bought for, for at least 75% of its use, so an India licence belongs on a server in India.
A red flag when you compare hosts: a "licence included" seat for a few hundred rupees a month. Tally's own Silver rental costs ₹750 a month, so a cheaper bundled seat often points to one licence being shared across many businesses. Ask whose name the licence is registered in. Our 12-point provider checklist lists the other questions worth asking.
Our approach is simple. Every TallyoCloud plan is a private server for one company, running that company's own licence. A client business whose own staff log in gets its own server and its own licence. The Tally cloud server page explains why we don't pool customers on one machine.
Fixing "Maximum Tally Virtual User (TVU) limit exceeded"
When every TVU on the licence is in use, the next person to open TallyPrime sees "Maximum Tally Virtual User (TVU) limit exceeded", followed by a request to close one or more TallyPrime instances and try again. That extra instance opens in Educational mode, Tally's restricted learning mode. Don't post real vouchers there; close it and free a TVU instead.
- Find the extra instances. On the server, an administrator can open Task Manager's Users tab to see each Windows session and the TallyPrime processes inside it. On TallyoCloud, our support team can check for you.
- Close duplicate windows. Work in several companies from one window with Alt+F3 and F3.
- Sign out stale sessions. A colleague who closed the Remote Desktop window without signing out is still holding a TVU. An administrator can sign that session out from the same Users tab.
- Stop it recurring. Set idle sessions to disconnect and disconnected sessions to log off after a set time, and ask everyone to sign out at the end of the day.
- Buy packs if the demand is real. On Gold, use Buy More in Control Centre. On Silver, convert to Gold first.
- New count not showing? Contact your Tally partner or TallyCare, since the packs are attached to your licence serial.
Not the same as the 30-day rule. TallyPrime also falls back to Educational mode if the licence can't reach the internet at least once in 30 days, per Tally's licensing FAQ. A cloud server stays online, so on a server the TVU limit is the usual cause.
Worked examples: from one Mac user to a 12-user distributor
These use Tally's India list prices before GST, with the slab applied to the number of extra packs. Your own numbers will depend on how many people work at the same time, not on how many people have a login.
| Scenario | Licence | Instances at peak | Extra packs | Extra per year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Owner on a MacBook, working alone | Silver | 1 | 0 | ₹0 |
| 5-person office, one window each | Gold | 5 | 0 | ₹0 |
| 12-user distributor, one window each | Gold | 12 | 2 | ₹3,000 |
| Same 12 users, two windows each | Gold | 24 | 14 | ₹18,900 |
| CA firm, 14 staff in tax season | Gold | 14 | 4 | ₹6,000 |
One Mac user
A proprietor who keeps their own books on a MacBook needs only a Silver licence on a cloud server: one person, one window, one TVU. Our Tally on Mac guide covers the set-up. The moment an accountant needs to log in at the same time, or the owner opens a second window, Silver isn't enough and Gold becomes the route.
A 5-person office
Gold's 10 free TVUs cover five people even if each keeps two windows open, so there's nothing to pay Tally. The spare headroom matters on GST deadline days, when someone opens an extra window "just for a minute" and forgets it.
A 12-user distributor
Billing, godown and accounts staff working together need 12 TVUs, so 2 extra packs at ₹1,500 each: ₹3,000 a year. If everyone habitually opens two windows, that becomes 24 instances and 14 packs at the 10% slab, or ₹18,900 a year. One-window discipline saves ₹15,900 a year. See Tally for distributors and multi-user Tally on Cloud for how teams and branches share one company.
A CA firm: staff seats vs client logins
A CA firm's own partners, staff and articles are users of the firm, so they count against the firm's TVUs. Fourteen people working at once in tax season means 4 extra packs, or ₹6,000 a year. Client logins are a different matter. Letting a client company's people into TallyPrime on the firm's licence is cloud-hosted access for an external client, which Tally's licensing page lists as misuse. A client whose own staff log in needs its own licence and its own server. Whether your staff can maintain clients' books on the firm's own licence is a question to settle in writing with Tally or an authorised partner; this guide doesn't answer it. More in Tally on Cloud for CA firms.
How TVUs work on a TallyoCloud server
- Your licence, in your name. You bring or rent your own TallyPrime licence. Our prices cover hosting only, and we never pool customers on one licence.
- Licence and data together. Both sit on your private server, as Tally's FAQ requires.
- One Windows login per person, so every TVU in use traces back to a name.
- Session limits switched on. Idle sessions disconnect and disconnected sessions log off after a set time, so forgotten windows don't hold TVUs.
- Plans sized to TVUs. Single-user fits Silver's single TVU. Multi-user fits Gold's 10, and beyond 10 people at once you add packs from Tally. Every user costs the same ₹799 a month. Details are on our pricing page.
- Daily automated backups with 30-day retention, so your books are protected however many people log in.
New to the idea? Tally on Cloud means your licensed TallyPrime runs on a Windows server in India and you open it from any device. You can try it on your own data with a free 7-day trial before you change anything.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Tally Virtual User (TVU)?
A Tally Virtual User is Tally's licence unit for TallyPrime opened through a virtualised environment, such as Windows Remote Desktop, a Windows thin client, Citrix or a cloud server. Each TallyPrime instance opened that way uses one TVU. People running TallyPrime directly on computers in your office LAN don't use TVUs, so the rule only matters once you work over Remote Desktop or the cloud.
How many virtual users are free with Silver and Gold?
Silver includes 1 TVU and Gold includes 10, free for the life of the licence. Rental licences get the same 1 or 10 while the rental is valid, and Tally.Server 9 includes 20. Gold owners can add up to 999 packs at ₹125 per user per month plus tax, billed annually, with volume slabs down to about ₹94. Silver owners must convert to Gold to get more.
Do I need a special Tally licence for RDP or a cloud server?
No. Tally doesn't sell a separate RDP licence. Your normal Silver or Gold licence covers Remote Desktop and cloud use through its TVUs, so you only need enough TVUs for the TallyPrime instances open at the same time. The licence and company data must sit on the same virtual machine. Separately, Microsoft requires a Remote Desktop licence for each user, which your hosting provider should supply.
Does TVU need an active TSS subscription?
No. Tally's TVU FAQ states that TVU has no dependency on TSS, so your free packs keep working even if TSS lapses. TSS still matters for other things: product upgrades, connected GST services such as e-invoicing and e-way bills, Tally.NET Remote Access and reports in a browser all need an active subscription. Each TVU pack is tied to one licence serial number.
Do AnyDesk or TeamViewer use Tally Virtual Users?
Tally's FAQ says TVU has no impact on access through applications like AnyDesk, because you are only viewing the screen of a computer that already runs TallyPrime; TeamViewer-style screen sharing works the same way. Remote Desktop is different: every TallyPrime instance opened over RDP uses a TVU, inside or outside your LAN. Screen sharing suits one person at a time and needs the office PC left on.
Can one TallyPrime licence serve users from different companies?
No. Tally's TVU FAQ says Remote Desktop access to one licence is fine for users of the same company but a violation when users belong to different companies. Its licensing best-practices page ties each licence to one legal business entity and treats sharing across entities as misuse. Branches of the same entity may share a licence; separate businesses each need their own licence and TVU packs.
How do I fix 'Maximum Tally Virtual User limit exceeded'?
The message means more TallyPrime instances are open over Remote Desktop than your licence has TVUs, so the extra instance opens in Educational mode. Close duplicate Tally windows, use Alt+F3 and F3 to work in several companies inside one window, and sign out of Windows instead of just closing the Remote Desktop window. If the team genuinely needs more, buy TVU packs in your Tally account's Control Centre.
Is the TVU price included in Tally on Cloud hosting?
No. TVU packs are bought from Tally Solutions or a Tally partner and attached to your own licence serial, and Tally says the TVU price covers only the licence, not servers or deployment. Hosting is a separate bill. At TallyoCloud, plans cover your private server and are priced per user, while your TallyPrime licence and any extra TVU packs stay in your company's name.
