How to print from Tally on Cloud on every device

TallyPrime runs on a server in a data centre, but your printer sits on your desk. This guide connects the two on Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android and Linux, and is honest about thermal, dot-matrix and cheque printing.

Quick answer

To print from Tally on Cloud, switch on printer redirection before you connect: tick Printers in Remote Desktop Connection on Windows, or on the Devices & Audio tab in Windows App on a Mac. Then press Ctrl+P in TallyPrime and pick the printer marked "(redirected)". On iPhone, iPad and Android, print a PDF instead.

How printing from Tally on Cloud works

With Tally on Cloud, TallyPrime runs on a Windows server, not on your computer. Your printer, though, is plugged into your laptop or sits on your office Wi-Fi. Remote Desktop bridges that gap with printer redirection: the printers your device can see appear inside the server session, and TallyPrime prints to them as if they were local.

Your PC or Mac, then your printer Your device's own driver prints it
iPhone, iPad, Android, Chromebook: no printer channel in Windows App, so TallyPrime makes a PDF (Ctrl+M or Ctrl+E) and the device prints it with AirPrint or Android's print service.
How a print job travels from TallyPrime on the server to the printer beside you. Diagram based on Microsoft's printer-redirection documentation.

Microsoft's printer-redirection guide spells out the rules that matter:

  • All your printers come across. When redirection is on, every printer your device can use is redirected, USB and network printers alike, and your device's default printer becomes the default in the session.
  • Nothing to install on the server. Redirected printers use the Remote Desktop Easy Print driver. The printer's own driver must be installed and working on your device.
  • You'll recognise them by name. Inside the session each one shows as printer name (redirected n), where n is your session number.
  • Both ends must agree. The server has to allow client printers, and your app has to ask for them. We allow it on the server side during setup, so the only switch you usually touch is the one in your own app.

New to Remote Desktop itself? Our explainer on how Tally RDP works covers the basics. Printing is one of the everyday jobs covered on our Tally on Cloud features page, alongside exports, backups and multi-user access.

Windows PC: tick Printers in Remote Desktop Connection

Windows gets the most complete printing support, because Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc.exe) is built into Windows 10 and 11. Set it up once and save the connection:

  1. Press the Windows key, type Remote Desktop Connection and open it. If we sent you a .rdp file, right-click it and choose Edit instead.
  2. Select Show Options, then open the Local Resources tab.
  3. Under Local devices and resources, tick Printers and Clipboard.
  4. Optional but useful: select More… and tick the drive where you want TallyPrime's PDF and Excel exports to land.
  5. Back on the General tab, select Save so the settings stick, then Connect.

Now open an invoice or report in TallyPrime and press Ctrl+P. Press C (Configure) to adjust settings, I (Preview) to check the layout and P (Print) to print. To change the printer TallyPrime uses, press Alt+P, choose Configuration, then Printer, as set out in Tally's printer set-up guide.

Set the right default printer before you connect. Your PC's default becomes the session's default, so TallyPrime picks it automatically and you skip a step on every invoice.

Want exports on your own PC as well? Redirected drives appear under This PC in the session, and their paths start with \\tsclient\. Point TallyPrime's export Folder path (Alt+E › Configuration, per Tally's export guide) at one of them, and every Ctrl+E lands on your computer. The full list of print, export and share keys is in our Tally cloud shortcut keys guide.

Mac: Windows App printer redirection and the generic driver

On a MacBook, iMac or Mac mini you connect with Microsoft's free Windows App. Printing works, with one important difference from Windows. First, switch it on (steps from Microsoft's Windows App redirection guide):

  1. Open Windows App and select Devices.
  2. Find your Tally server and select the pencil (edit) icon on its card.
  3. On the Devices & Audio tab, tick Printers. Set the clipboard to Bidirectional while you're there.
  4. On the Folders tab, tick Redirect folders, select + and choose a Mac folder, such as a new one called Tally Exports.
  5. Select Save and reconnect. Your Mac's printers now appear in TallyPrime's Ctrl+P list.

What the generic driver means for your layouts

Microsoft's Windows App feature comparison notes that on macOS, redirected printers use the generic Publisher Imagesetter driver (through CUPS), and native printer drivers aren't supported. In practice:

  • Plain A4 and A5 invoices print fine on typical laser and inkjet printers. The page is prepared on the server and macOS hands it to your printer.
  • Printer-specific options don't come across. Tray choice, duplex presets, toner-save and draft modes from your printer's own driver aren't available inside the session.
  • Margins and scaling can shift slightly. Compare your first invoice with your usual layout. If the footer or GSTIN line is clipped, adjust margins in TallyPrime's print configuration.
  • Dot-matrix printers and pre-printed stationery need a test. Draft fonts and continuous-feed page lengths depend on the native driver, which this route can't use.

The fallback always works: export the invoice as a PDF with Ctrl+E to your redirected folder, open it in Preview and print with the Mac's full driver. For keyboard mapping, Apple silicon and everything else about running TallyPrime on a Mac, see our Tally on Mac guide.

iPhone, iPad, Android and Chromebook: print through a PDF

Microsoft's feature comparison marks printer redirection as unsupported in Windows App on iOS, iPadOS, Android and ChromeOS. So Ctrl+P inside the session can't reach the printer next to you. TallyPrime gives you two good ways round it, and a third shortcut that people often mistake for one.

Option 1: e-mail the PDF to yourself (Ctrl+M)

Open the invoice or report and press Ctrl+M, or use the Share menu (Alt+M). Send it to your own address, open the attachment on your phone and print. You set up e-mail in TallyPrime once; release 7.1 added secure sign-in for Gmail and Microsoft accounts, according to Tally's release notes.

Option 2: export to your device's storage (Ctrl+E)

Windows App can share a folder on your phone or tablet with the server. Touch and hold your server in Windows App, tap Edit, and under Device & audio redirection turn on Storage. On an iPhone or iPad, that folder lives in the Files app under On My iPhone (or On My iPad) › Windows. Inside the session it shows as a network drive. Set it as TallyPrime's export Folder path once, and every Ctrl+E PDF lands on your device.

Then print from the device

  • iPhone and iPad: open the PDF, tap Share, then Print, and pick an AirPrint printer.
  • Android: open the PDF in Files or your PDF viewer, tap the ⋮ menu or Share, then Print.
  • Chromebook: open the PDF and press Ctrl+P to use the printers set up in ChromeOS.

Ctrl+Alt+W is not a print shortcut. It sends the voucher to the party's WhatsApp through Tally's paid WhatsApp for Business service, which needs its own subscription and an active TSS (Tally help). It doesn't put a PDF on your own phone.

Linux desktops aren't a Windows App platform, so you'd connect with Remmina. Its RDP profile has a Share printers option on the Advanced tab that passes your CUPS printers into the session; results depend on the printer, so test yours. Setup is covered in Tally on Linux and Chromebook, and the phone side in Tally on mobile.

Device × printer matrix: what works where

Pick your device and printer to see the route that works, or scan the full table. Green means it prints directly, amber means it usually works but needs a test with your own printer and stationery, and red means use the PDF route.

Based on Microsoft's Windows App feature comparison (updated September 2026), Microsoft's printer-redirection guide and Tally Solutions' printing help, checked on 2026-10-06. This is a documentation summary, not a lab test: printers vary by model, so treat every amber cell as "try it during your free 7-day trial", not a promise.

Comparing with Tally's own TallyPrime Cloud Access? Its FAQ says the Windows client detects locally attached printers, while browser sessions print to PDF only and phones and tablets aren't supported. See TallyPrime Cloud Access vs Tally on Cloud for the full comparison.

Thermal, barcode and dot-matrix printers: options and limits

Laser and inkjet printers are easy because they print whole pages. Counter and warehouse printers are fussier, and Remote Desktop changes how the job reaches them. Easy Print sends a finished page rather than the printer's own command language, and Microsoft lists RAW printing, for printers that expect raw text instead of XPS, as a preview feature for Azure Virtual Desktop only. On a standard Remote Desktop server, don't count on it.

Thermal receipt printers

From a Windows PC these usually work once the printer's own driver is installed on the PC and its paper size is set to your roll width there; Easy Print picks that up. Print a test bill and check the right-hand edge isn't cut off. On a Mac, the generic driver may not offer roll sizes or auto-cut, so test before you rely on it at the counter.

Barcode and label printers

Labels that print as an ordinary page go through like any other document. Label software that sends raw commands, such as ZPL, EPL or TSPL, can't pass through Easy Print. Barcode scanners are simpler: a USB scanner in keyboard mode types into the session much as a keyboard does, so it generally works from Windows and Mac. Check yours during the trial.

Dot-matrix printers and multi-part stationery

TallyPrime offers a Dot Matrix Format for multi-copy stationery, alongside Neat mode and Quick/Draft mode; press F8 on the print screen to choose, as Tally's print configuration guide explains. Over Remote Desktop the printer may receive a graphic page instead of plain text, so speed and draft fonts can differ from your old office setup. If that matters, you have four options:

  1. The manufacturer's driver on your server. Each TallyoCloud customer gets a private server, so the printer maker's driver can be installed on it. When the same driver is on your Windows PC, the server can use it instead of Easy Print; a Group Policy setting decides which comes first. Tell our support team your printer model.
  2. Redirect the port (Windows only). Older serial printers can be passed through under Local Resources › More › Ports in Remote Desktop Connection. Microsoft lists serial and USB port redirection as Windows-only.
  3. Change the document, not the printer. Move tax invoices to a laser printer on plain A4 and keep the dot-matrix for delivery challans or godown copies.
  4. Keep a local print station. A Windows PC at the counter or godown stays connected to the cloud session and drives the fussy printer, while everyone else works from anywhere. This suits high-volume billing in distribution and pharma wholesale.

Other USB peripherals follow similar rules. If you file returns with a USB token, read DSC tokens on Tally cloud.

Cheque and pre-printed stationery alignment

Cheques and pre-printed invoices leave no room for a 2 mm drift. The layout settings live in TallyPrime, but the final position depends on the printer path, so set them up from the computer you'll actually print from.

Set up cheque printing in TallyPrime

  1. Press Alt+G › Alter Master › Ledger and open your bank ledger.
  2. Enable Set/Alter Bank configuration, set Enable Cheque Printing to Yes and open Set/Alter Cheque Printing configuration.
  3. Choose your bank's predefined format (these download over the internet, which your cloud server always has), press Alt+B to copy another bank's format, or Alt+L for a user-defined layout.
  4. Press Ctrl+P to print a sample and C to choose horizontal or vertical alignment, then save with Ctrl+A.

Steps from Tally's cheque payments set-up guide.

Get the alignment right over Remote Desktop

  • Print the sample on plain paper first, hold it against a real cheque leaf up to the light, and adjust the dimensions in small steps.
  • Keep scaling at 100% and switch off any "fit to page" option in the printer driver on your device.
  • Print cheques from the same computer every time. The Windows Easy Print path and the Mac generic driver can place text slightly differently.
  • For pre-printed invoices, press F9 on the print screen to switch between Plain Paper and Pre-Printed Paper, and enter page height, width and margins in TallyPrime's print configuration.
  • Re-check alignment after changing printers, drivers or your Windows App version.

Speed tips: big print jobs use more bandwidth

Everyday work in TallyPrime sends only screen updates and keystrokes, which is why it runs smoothly on ordinary broadband. Printing is different, because the whole print job travels from the server to your device. Microsoft's RDP bandwidth guide uses the example of a 200-page printout to a local printer, which it says will use "a significant amount of network bandwidth".

  • Preview before you print (press I), so you don't send the same 40-page ledger twice.
  • Print only what you need with Pages to Print (F10 on the print screen).
  • Export long reports once. Send one PDF or Excel file to your redirected drive with Ctrl+E and print it locally. It crosses the network once, and reprints cost nothing.
  • Go easy on images. Logos, watermarks and header images from TallyPrime 7.1's invoice templates make every page heavier when you print hundreds in a batch.
  • Run big batches at quiet times. Month-end statements printed while colleagues enter vouchers compete for the same office connection.

How much speed you need in the first place is covered in internet speed for Tally on Cloud.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add my printer in Tally Cloud?

On a Windows PC, open Remote Desktop Connection, select Show Options, open the Local Resources tab and tick Printers before you connect. On a Mac, edit the server in Windows App and tick Printers on the Devices & Audio tab. Your printer then appears inside the session as 'printer name (redirected n)', and TallyPrime lists it when you press Ctrl+P. Nothing needs installing on the server.

Why doesn't my printer show up in the remote session?

Usually printer redirection is switched off in your Remote Desktop app, the printer isn't installed or working on your own computer, or you reconnected to an old session that started without it. Tick Printers, sign out of the session fully and connect again. If it still doesn't appear, export a PDF from TallyPrime so work continues, and send support your device and printer model.

Can I print from an iPad or Android phone?

Not directly. Microsoft's Windows App doesn't redirect printers on iPhone, iPad, Android or Chromebook. In TallyPrime, e-mail the invoice to yourself as a PDF with Ctrl+M, or export it with Ctrl+E to your device's redirected storage folder, then print it with AirPrint or Android's print service. Ctrl+Alt+W sends the voucher to the party's WhatsApp, not to your own phone.

Do dot-matrix printers and pre-printed stationery work over Remote Desktop?

Sometimes, after testing. Redirected printers use Microsoft's Easy Print driver from a Windows PC, or a generic driver from a Mac, which may not reproduce dot-matrix draft fonts, continuous-feed page lengths or exact stationery alignment. Options include the manufacturer's driver on your private server, redirecting a serial port from a Windows PC, or keeping a local print station. Test your own stationery during the free trial.

Can I use a thermal receipt printer with Tally on Cloud?

Often, from a Windows PC. Install the thermal printer's own driver on that PC and set its paper size to your roll width, such as 80 mm, and the redirected printer uses those settings. Label and receipt software that sends raw printer commands won't pass through Easy Print, and a Mac's generic driver may not offer roll sizes, so test before you go live at a billing counter.

Does printing from the cloud use a lot of internet data?

A single invoice is small, but the whole print job travels from the server to your device. Microsoft notes that printing a 200-page document to a local printer uses a significant amount of network bandwidth. Preview first, print only the page range you need, and for long ledgers export one PDF or Excel file to your own computer and print it from there.

Is printing different on Tally's own TallyPrime Cloud Access?

Yes. Tally's FAQ says TallyPrime Cloud Access detects printers attached to a local Windows PC through its Windows client, but browser sessions, which Mac users rely on, print only to PDF, and phones and tablets aren't supported. On a Windows cloud server like ours, Macs print to their own printers through Windows App and phones print through a PDF.
