Tally on Mac: how to use TallyPrime on a MacBook Air, Pro, iMac or Mac mini

There is no Mac version of TallyPrime, and you don't need one. Your licensed TallyPrime runs on a private Windows server in India, and your MacBook, iMac or Mac mini opens it in a window through Microsoft's free Windows App. Same F-keys, your own printer, and no Parallels or Windows licence on the Mac.

  • 7-day trial, no card
  • Only Windows App on your Mac
  • Starting from ₹799/month
  • Daily automated backups
Quick answer

No, TallyPrime does not run natively on macOS: Tally Solutions says it installs only on Microsoft Windows, and no Mac download exists. The dependable way to use Tally on Mac is to keep your licensed TallyPrime on a Windows cloud server and open it with Microsoft's free Windows App (macOS 14 or later). Parallels with Windows 11 also works on a single Mac.

The honest answer

Does TallyPrime work on Mac? Not on its own.

TallyPrime is a 64-bit Windows program. Tally Solutions' recommended system configuration asks for a 64-bit (x64) processor, 4 GB of RAM and a 64-bit edition of Windows 7 or later, including Windows 11. There is no macOS, iPadOS, Android or Linux edition.

So when you search for a "Tally for Mac free download", there is nothing genuine to find. Every release, including the current TallyPrime 7.1, ships as a Windows installer, and even TallyPrime's free Educational mode is that same Windows program. Files on third-party sites that claim to be a Mac build are, at best, repackaged Windows installers and, at worst, malware. Download TallyPrime only from tallysolutions.com.

Why isn't Tally available on Mac?

TallyPrime is built for x64 Windows, and Tally Solutions has not announced a macOS version. Even its own hosted service, TallyPrime Cloud Access, reaches Mac users through a web browser rather than a Mac app. Until that changes, every working route puts Windows somewhere: on a server, in a virtual machine, or in a compatibility layer. That is what Tally on Cloud means in practice.

What about Tally.ERP 9 on a Mac?

Tally.ERP 9 was Windows-only too. It still opens, but Tally stopped TSS renewals for it from 16 August 2026, so updates and connected services are winding down. If you are moving to a Mac, it is a sensible moment to move to TallyPrime as well. Our guide on whether Tally.ERP 9 is discontinued explains your options.

In Tally Solutions' own words

"Currently TallyPrime can only be installed on Microsoft Windows operating systems."

Recommended system configuration for TallyPrime, updated 22 Sep 2026

"No, currently TallyPrime is not supported on MAC."

Never install a "TallyPrime for Mac" file from a download site. Genuine TallyPrime comes only from tallysolutions.com, and it is always a Windows installer.

The simple route

Run TallyPrime on your Mac in 3 steps

TallyPrime lives on a private Windows server, and your Mac shows it through Microsoft's own Remote Desktop app. Nothing Windows-related is installed on the Mac, so a macOS update can't break your books.

Install Windows App

Open the Mac App Store and install Windows App by Microsoft Corporation, previously called Microsoft Remote Desktop. It is free, needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later, and doesn't ask for a Microsoft account to reach a server.

Add your Tally server

Open the connection file we send you, or click + then Add PC and type the server address and username. Set Keyboard Mode to Scancode with Control+Command+K so Tally's shortcuts pass straight through.

Connect and work

Double-click the server tile and sign in. TallyPrime opens with your companies already restored, and your Mac's printers and a shared folder appear inside the session. Close the window when you're done; your data stays live on the server.

What we set up on the server side

  • A private Windows server in a secure data centre in India, with TallyPrime 7.1 installed and patched.
  • Your data moved for you. We restore every company from your data folder or backup; see how migration works.
  • Your licence, reactivated. Tally counts a Remote Desktop session as a Tally Virtual User. Silver includes one and Gold includes ten, so a Silver licence already covers one Mac user (TVU rules explained).
  • Daily automated backups kept off the server with 30-day retention, plus firewall rules and per-user access. Read how we secure your data.

Why WineBottler and CrossOver are fragile for your books

Wine-based tools translate a Windows program's calls into macOS ones, so TallyPrime can open without any copy of Windows. Tally's own FAQ mentions WineBottler, which is why many Mac users try it first. For a single student, it can be a quick experiment. For a business's books, there are four problems.

Nobody supports it

Tally lists only Windows as supported, and its FAQ says TallyPrime is not supported on Mac. If an upgrade breaks something the night before a GST deadline, there's no vendor whose job it is to fix it.

The Rosetta cliff

On Apple silicon, stable CrossOver still relies on Apple's Rosetta 2. Apple says Rosetta is available up to macOS 27, and that from macOS 28 it will be kept only for "certain older, unmaintained games". A native Arm CrossOver is only in preview.

Free wrappers are fading

Whisky, a popular free wrapper, now tells visitors it is no longer maintained and suggests buying CrossOver instead. WineBottler, the tool Tally's FAQ names, appears to be unmaintained as well.

The edges break first

Voucher entry may work, but printing, Excel exports, DSC tokens and add-ons are the parts most likely to need workarounds. Those are exactly the parts accountants depend on at month-end.

Apple silicon

Apple silicon M1 to M5, and the MacBook Neo

Every new Mac Apple has launched since late 2020 uses Apple silicon, and Boot Camp isn't available on any of them. Microsoft's support page on Windows 11 on Apple-silicon Macs lists two ways: a Windows 365 Cloud PC, or Parallels Desktop running the Arm version of Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise.

TallyPrime is an x64 program, so inside Windows 11 on Arm it runs through Microsoft's x64 emulation. Microsoft notes that emulation covers apps but not drivers, which matters for USB DSC tokens and dot-matrix printers: they need Arm64 drivers. Independent hands-on reports show TallyPrime 7.1 handling everyday voucher entry in Parallels, but Tally doesn't list Arm as a supported platform.

With a cloud server, none of this applies. Your Mac runs only Windows App, a free Microsoft client, and TallyPrime runs on x64 Windows Server, the platform Tally supports. An M1 MacBook Air from 2020 and the newest M5 MacBook Pro get the same experience.

M1–M5chips Parallels Desktop 27 supports, on macOS 14 or later
4 GBminimum a Windows virtual machine needs on a MacBook Neo
0Windows licences needed on your Mac for the cloud route
MacBook Neo

8 GB makes a remote session the comfortable route

The MacBook Neo uses an A18 Pro chip with a fixed 8 GB of memory. Parallels has confirmed it can run Windows 11 on Arm, but positions it for light, occasional Windows use (reported by Thurrott, March 2026), and the virtual machine needs at least 4 GB, which leaves macOS about half. A Windows App session uses only a small slice of the Neo's memory, because TallyPrime runs on the server.

Still on an Intel Mac? Apple's Boot Camp works only on Intel-based Macs, and macOS 26 Tahoe is the last macOS release for them. Boot Camp can still run TallyPrime today, but that hardware is near the end of its updates. Windows App runs on any Intel Mac that has macOS 14 or later, so the cloud route moves with you when you switch to Apple silicon.

Model by model

MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac mini: settings that help

TallyPrime is mostly text and tables, so any Mac on macOS 14 or later handles it. The differences are the screen and the keyboard. Each tip uses a setting Microsoft documents for Windows App's display options on macOS.

Tally on MacBook Air

On a 13-inch screen, tick Start session in full screen and swipe between Tally and macOS with three or four fingers, depending on your trackpad settings. Leave Optimize for Retina displays off on mobile data, because Microsoft says it uses four times more bandwidth. Base 8 GB models are fine, as the server does the work.

Tally on MacBook Pro

The sharper 14- and 16-inch screens make Retina mode worth switching on when you're on office broadband, because small Tally fonts look crisper. Turn on standard function keys in macOS so F8 means F8. On older Touch Bar models, hold fn to bring up F1 to F12.

Tally on iMac

The big screen suits long data-entry sessions. Tick Update the session resolution on resize so TallyPrime reflows neatly when you place it beside Mail or WhatsApp. A Magic Keyboard with a numeric keypad and full function row makes voucher entry feel like the office PC.

Tally on Mac mini

Usually paired with one or two external monitors and any USB or Bluetooth keyboard. Use all monitors spreads the Windows session across every display. If a second display goes blank in full screen, Microsoft's fix is to turn on Displays have separate Spaces in Mission Control, or to use all monitors.

Two screens on a MacBook? Microsoft supports Apple's Sidecar during a session, so an iPad can act as a second display beside your MacBook. Wondering whether your connection can handle Retina mode? See how much internet speed Tally on Cloud needs.

Keyboard-first, like Tally

Mac keyboard: the keys that matter in Tally

TallyPrime is built to be driven from the keyboard, so this is the part Mac users ask about most. Five rules cover nearly everything. They come from Microsoft's guide to keyboard input in Windows App and Tally's official shortcut list.

  • Control is Ctrl. Tally's Ctrl+A (save), Ctrl+P (print) and Ctrl+E (export) use the Mac's Control key.
  • Left Option is Alt. Use it for Alt+G (Go To) and Alt+C (create a master on the fly). Microsoft notes the right Option key acts as Alt Gr.
  • Command is the Windows key. Windows App still maps a few Mac habits, such as Command+C and Command+V for copy and paste.
  • Scancode mode for shortcuts. Press Control+Command+K, or choose Connections, then Keyboard Mode, then Scancode. Microsoft recommends it for shortcut combinations and keys like the arrows. Control+Command+U switches back to Unicode if you type in an Indian-language input source.
  • F-keys without fn. In System Settings, open Keyboard, then Keyboard Shortcuts, then Function Keys, and turn on "Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys". Otherwise, hold fn with each F-key.

On your Mac, press fn + F8. Windows App sends F8 to the server, and TallyPrime opens a Sales voucher.

With standard function keys turned on, F8 alone does it.

Printing, exports and files from a Mac

What travels between your Mac and the Tally server is set by Microsoft's Windows App. Here is what its feature comparison lists for macOS, and what it means for your invoices.

Your Mac's printers

Printer redirection works on macOS through Microsoft's generic "Publisher Imagesetter" driver; native printer drivers aren't supported. That suits most laser and inkjet printers for A4 and A5 invoices. Dot-matrix printers and pre-printed stationery depend on exact alignment, so check them during your free trial before you commit.

Exports that land on your Mac

Share a Mac folder such as Downloads with the session. Then, in TallyPrime, press Alt+E, open Configuration and point the export folder at that shared folder. Every Ctrl+E export to Excel or PDF now lands straight on your Mac.

Copy and paste both ways

The clipboard is shared in both directions, so you can copy a GSTIN from an email on your Mac into a party ledger, or copy figures out of a Tally report into Numbers. PDFs exported to the shared folder open in Preview, ready to print or attach.

USB devices and DSC tokens

Windows App on macOS does not support USB redirection, so a USB device plugged into your Mac won't appear on the server as a USB device. Microsoft lists smart-card redirection as supported on macOS, but DSC tokens vary. Our DSC token guide covers GST, e-invoice and ITR signing.

US-dollar prices are converted at about ₹88 per US$ and are estimates; import GST may apply. The Windows 11 Pro price from Microsoft Store India includes GST. Our prices exclude GST and are explained on the pricing page.

The second user changes the maths

Local routes cost the same again for every extra Mac, and each needs its own Windows licence. On one cloud server, each extra person adds the same ₹799 a month and needs no Windows licence of their own. See multi-user Tally on Cloud.

Your time is a cost too

A Windows virtual machine needs monthly updates, antivirus and a backup routine that lives outside the VM. Snapshots are not accounting backups. Budget regular time for this if you go local.

The Mac you already own

Parallels is happiest with 16 GB of memory and plenty of free disk space. If your Mac has 8 GB, the cloud route avoids an early upgrade, because the server does the work.

Decide in a minute

Which option should you choose?

Each route is right for someone. Here is the short version, and the picker beside it asks four questions to point you to one.

  • One person, a 16 GB Mac, often offline: Parallels Desktop with Windows 11 on Arm. You own the backups and updates.
  • Lowest price, browser is fine, no phone access: TallyPrime Cloud Access, Tally's own service.
  • Already on Microsoft 365 work accounts and want a full Windows desktop per person: Windows 365.
  • An 8 GB MacBook Air or Neo, iPhone or iPad access, local printing, Excel or add-ons, or a team or CA who also logs in: a Windows cloud server like ours.
  • An Intel Mac: Boot Camp works today, but plan your move, because these Macs no longer get new macOS releases.

Looking for a Mac-native alternative to TallyPrime instead? Changing accounting software means re-creating masters, retraining staff and rebuilding GST and e-invoice routines. For most businesses it is simpler to keep TallyPrime and change how they reach it, which also keeps your CA and auditor working with you as before. If phones matter too, see Tally on mobile.

FAQ

Tally on Mac: frequently asked questions

Does TallyPrime work on Mac?

Not natively. Tally Solutions' system requirements say TallyPrime installs only on Microsoft Windows, and its FAQ says it is not supported on Mac, while mentioning Wine-based tools such as WineBottler. Dependable routes are a Windows cloud server opened with Microsoft's free Windows App, Tally's browser-based Cloud Access, a Windows 365 Cloud PC, or Windows 11 running inside Parallels Desktop.

Is there a TallyPrime download for Mac?

No. Every TallyPrime release, including 7.1, is a Windows program, so any file offered as a Mac installer or a 'Tally for Mac free download' is not genuine and may carry malware. Download TallyPrime only from tallysolutions.com. With Tally on Cloud, the only thing you install on your Mac is Microsoft's free Windows App from the Mac App Store.

Will Tally work on a MacBook with an M1 to M5 chip?

Yes, through a cloud server, because the Mac only runs Microsoft's Windows App, which needs macOS 14 or later and behaves the same on every M-series chip. To run Windows yourself, Microsoft lists two options: Parallels with a Windows 11 Pro licence on the Mac, or a Windows 365 Cloud PC. In Parallels, TallyPrime runs under x64 emulation, which Tally does not list as supported.

Do Tally's F-keys and Alt shortcuts work on a Mac keyboard?

Yes. Switch Windows App to scancode mode with Control+Command+K, and turn on 'Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys' in macOS so F8, F9 and the other function keys reach TallyPrime without holding fn. Use Control for Ctrl and the left Option key for Alt. Command acts as the Windows key, and the right Option key acts as Alt Gr.

Can I print Tally invoices from a Mac?

Yes. Windows App passes your Mac's printers into the session through a generic driver, so laser and inkjet invoices print on your own printer. Microsoft doesn't support native printer drivers or USB redirection on macOS, so check dot-matrix printers and pre-printed stationery during your free trial. Exporting a PDF to your Mac and printing it from Preview always works.

Do I need a separate TallyPrime licence to use Tally on a Mac?

You use your own licence. Tally counts cloud and Remote Desktop sessions as Tally Virtual Users: Silver includes one and Gold includes ten concurrent users, and extra packs cost about ₹125 per user per month from Tally. One business's licence must never be shared with another business. During setup we help you reactivate your existing licence on your private server, and you type your own Tally.NET details.

Is TallyPrime Cloud Access the same as Tally on Cloud?

No. TallyPrime Cloud Access is Tally Solutions' own hosted service, from ₹600 per user per month plus GST. Its FAQ says TallyPrime runs there on Linux through WINE, Mac users connect through a browser that prints to PDF only, and phones and tablets are not supported. Our Tally on Cloud runs TallyPrime on a Windows server that you open with Windows App.
