Is Tally.ERP 9 discontinued? Not as software. Tally says it will keep working, but it gets no new features, and TSS renewal for it was discontinued from 16 August 2026. Once your TSS lapses, statutory and connected-service updates stop. The upgrade to TallyPrime is free if your TSS was active on or after 9 November 2020.
The short answer: it works, but it has stopped moving
The confusion comes from the word "discontinued". Tally Solutions' own upgrade page is direct about it: "Tally.ERP 9 is not getting discontinued, it will continue to work." Your installed copy opens, your companies load, and you can still post vouchers and print reports.
What changed is everything around the software. New development moved to TallyPrime when it launched on 9 November 2020, and Tally's product overview describes Tally.ERP 9 as no longer actively developed. Then, from 16 August 2026, Tally discontinued TSS renewal on Tally.ERP 9 for all customers. Its page now tells Tally.ERP 9 users to upgrade to TallyPrime and renew TSS there.
So the honest summary is: Tally.ERP 9 is not switched off, but its subscription is. TSS (Tally Software Services) is the yearly plan that delivers product upgrades, statutory changes and connected services. Without the option to renew it, Tally.ERP 9 is frozen at whatever it could do on the day your last TSS ran out.
- TallyPrime launchesSuccessor to Tally.ERP 9, and the cut-off date for the free upgrade.
- TallyPrime 7.0Auto Backup, SmartFind and PrimeBanking payments.
- TallyPrime 7.1Current release, with e-TDS and e-TCS under the Income-tax Act 2025.
- Tally.ERP 9 TSS renewal endsFor all customers, per Tally's upgrade page.
- Tally.ERP 9 still runsNo new features, no renewals, no new statutory updates.
Renewed shortly before 16 August? Tally's notice is about renewal, so a subscription still inside its paid-up term should run until its end date. Check that date in your Tally account. After it, the subscription can't be renewed on Tally.ERP 9.
What still works, and what stops without TSS
Tally's TSS FAQ explains what an expired TSS means for any Tally product: you can still use Tally as before, but you lose value-added services such as remote access, software upgrades and connected services. For Tally.ERP 9 users, that lapse is now permanent.
| Area | After your Tally.ERP 9 TSS ends |
|---|---|
| Opening companies, vouchers, reports | Keeps working |
| Printing and exporting | Keeps working |
| Your Silver or Gold licence | Stays valid; TSS is a separate subscription |
| Statutory updates (GST, TDS and other law changes) | Stop |
| Connected services, such as e-invoice and e-way bill | Stop |
| Tally.NET Remote Access and online reports | Stop |
| Online data sync, banking and payment services | Stop |
| New features | None either way; development moved to TallyPrime |

The real risks of staying on Tally.ERP 9
Nothing breaks on day one, which is exactly why businesses drift. The risk builds quietly, one rule change at a time.
- Statutory drift. Tax law keeps changing, and the fixes now ship only in TallyPrime. TallyPrime 7.1, for example, added e-TDS and e-TCS returns under the Income-tax Act 2025, with its new forms, plus HSN/SAC validation for GST, per its release notes. A frozen Tally.ERP 9 won't learn the next change either.
- GST work moves outside Tally. Without connected services, e-invoices, e-way bills and returns turn into manual work on government portals, with more re-keying and more room for mismatches.
- Remote work stops. If your team used Tally.NET Remote Access from home, it needs active TSS. Our comparison of Tally remote access options shows what replaces it.
- A bigger move later. Every year you add makes the company larger, and a large multi-year company takes longer to migrate. Upgrading on a calm week beats upgrading in the middle of a filing deadline.
What TallyPrime has added since 2020
Everything below shipped in TallyPrime releases after development moved on from Tally.ERP 9. It's the clearest way to see how far the two products have drifted apart.
| TallyPrime release | Date | What it added |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0 | Jul 2021 | Connected e-way bill, online GSTIN and HSN validation, reports in a browser |
| 2.1 | Mar 2022 | Edit Log (audit trail) and digital signatures on PDFs |
| 4.0 | Dec 2023 | WhatsApp sharing, graphical dashboard, Excel import |
| 5.0 | Sep 2024 | Connected GST: upload, download and file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B from inside Tally |
| 6.0 and 6.1 | Mar and Jun 2025 | Connected Banking, then the GST Invoice Management System (IMS) |
| 7.0 | Dec 2025 | Scheduled Auto Backup, SmartFind, smoother migration with pause and resume |
| 7.1 | 2026 | Invoice print templates, Schedule III statements, e-TDS and e-TCS under the Income-tax Act 2025 |

Is the upgrade to TallyPrime free? The 9 November 2020 rule
Tally's rule has a single date in it. If your Tally.ERP 9 TSS was active on or after 9 November 2020, the upgrade to TallyPrime is free. If your TSS expired before that date, the upgrade is paid. Tally's page also says your licence carries over and your data stays safe, and it lists the upgrade as four steps: download, install, reactivate the licence, migrate the data.
Free upgrade doesn't mean free updates forever. To get statutory updates and connected GST services on TallyPrime, you still renew TSS there. Tally's customer hub lists one year at ₹4,500 for Silver and ₹13,500 for Gold, plus 18% GST. Our TallyPrime price guide covers licences, rentals and TSS in full.
Not sure where you stand? Use the checker below. It applies Tally's published rule to your TSS date and tells you what to do next.
Is your TallyPrime upgrade free?
This applies the rule on Tally's upgrade page; it isn't an official eligibility check. Tally or your Tally partner confirms the final answer against your licence serial number. Prices exclude GST.
Your TSS was active on or after 9 November 2020, so Tally's rule makes the upgrade free.
- Close Tally.ERP 9 on every computer and back up every company.
- Install the latest TallyPrime and reactivate your licence with your Tally.NET ID.
- Open the data and choose Alt+Y › Migrate.
- Compare the trial balance, then renew TSS on TallyPrime.
How to migrate Tally.ERP 9 data to TallyPrime
Tally.ERP 9 stores data in an older format (files ending in .900), while TallyPrime 3.0 and later use .1800, according to Tally's data migration FAQ. TallyPrime converts the data for you. These steps follow Tally's migration guide, last updated 14 January 2026.
- Take stock. Note your licence serial, your TSS status and every TDL or add-on loaded in Tally.ERP 9, with the developer's contact.
- Back up. Ask everyone to close Tally.ERP 9, then zip the whole numbered company folders (five-digit, such as
10000). Never copy single files out of a folder. - Install the latest TallyPrime on 64-bit Windows and reactivate your licence with your Tally.NET ID.
- Start the migration. Open the company, or press Alt+Y (Data) › Migrate; it's also under F1 › Troubleshooting › Migrate. Leave "Backup Company Data before Migration" set to Yes.
- Choose the options. Decide whether to keep voucher numbering for sales vouchers, all vouchers or none, set the HSN/SAC summary options and the tax-difference tolerance (default 0), then press R.
- Let it finish. A large company can take a while. Press Esc to pause and pick "Continue Migration" later; don't force-stop it, because Tally warns that might damage the data.
- Verify. Read the Migration Summary of master and voucher counts, then compare the trial balance, stock summary and key ledgers with Tally.ERP 9.
- Reload add-ons and reconnect. Load TallyPrime versions of your TDLs, renew TSS, and log back in to GST and other connected services.
The six-digit company. TallyPrime doesn't overwrite your Tally.ERP 9 data. It keeps the original five-digit company and creates a new six-digit one, such as 100000, in the latest format. Work only in the new one from go-live day.
Data older than Tally.ERP 9? Companies from Tally 5.4, 6.3 or 7.2 take two steps: first into Tally.ERP 9 format with Tally.ERP 9's own migration tool, then into TallyPrime. Plan a trial run before the real move.
Keep old years as a read-only archive
Because migration leaves the original company untouched, you end up with two copies of the same books. Handle that deliberately, or someone will post a bill in the wrong one.
- One live company. From go-live, all entries go into the six-digit TallyPrime company. Tell the whole team the date.
- Freeze the original. Rename the old company folder or make it read-only, so nobody keeps posting in Tally.ERP 9 out of habit.
- Keep a dated backup off the machine. Store the pre-migration zip somewhere other than the computer that runs TallyPrime, and test that it opens.
- Keep Tally.ERP 9 only for reference. It still runs, so it can open the frozen company if an auditor or tax officer asks about an old year.
The rest of your backup routine should move to TallyPrime too. Release 7.0 added scheduled Auto Backup to a local drive or Tally's TallyDrive, which needs active TSS. Our Tally data backup guide compares the options.
Your three options after 16 August 2026
Most businesses still on Tally.ERP 9 choose between three paths. Here's how they compare.
| Stay on Tally.ERP 9 | Upgrade on your office PC | Upgrade and move to the cloud | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Statutory and GST updates | No, once TSS lapses | With TSS | With TSS |
| Connected e-invoice and e-way bill | No | With TSS | With TSS; the server stays online |
| Work from a Mac, iPhone or Android | No | No; TallyPrime installs only on Windows | Yes, through Microsoft's Windows App |
| Backups | Whatever you do by hand | Auto Backup, if the PC is on | Daily automated backups, 30-day retention |
| Who migrates the data | Nothing to migrate | You or your Tally partner | We do it with you during onboarding |
| What you pay | Nothing new | Upgrade (free or paid) plus TSS | Upgrade plus TSS, plus hosting from ₹799 a month + GST |
Windows-only installation per Tally's TallyPrime FAQ. Hosting prices exclude the TallyPrime licence, TSS and any extra virtual-user packs.
Staying put only makes sense for a company you no longer post in, such as a closed business or a frozen archive. For live books, the choice is really between the last two columns, and it comes down to where you want to work from.
Upgrade and move to TallyPrime on the cloud in one step
If you're upgrading anyway, it's worth asking whether TallyPrime should keep living on one office PC. Tally on Cloud means your licensed TallyPrime runs on a Windows server in India, and you open it from any device. Moving at upgrade time means one migration and one go-live day instead of two.
- We migrate on the server. You upload your Tally.ERP 9 company folders, and we restore them on your private server, run the migration with you and check the trial balance before go-live. Assisted migration and the licence move are included in every plan; the Tally data migration guide shows each step, including Tally.ERP 9 on cloud.
- Your licence, in your name. The same Silver or Gold licence moves to the server. Over Remote Desktop, Tally counts each open TallyPrime as a virtual user: Silver includes 1 and Gold includes 10. Our TVU guide explains the rule.
- Any screen. Open TallyPrime from Windows with Remote Desktop Connection, or from a Mac, iPhone, iPad or Android with Microsoft's free Windows App. See Tally on Mac and Tally on mobile.
- Connected GST that stays connected. The server is always online, so e-invoicing, e-way bills and connected GST work whenever your TSS is active.
- Backups handled. Daily automated backups with 30-day retention, and the original Tally.ERP 9 companies can stay on your server as a read-only archive.
- Simple pricing. A private server from ₹799 a month plus GST, ready within one business day, with Support 7 days a week. Details on our pricing page.
Tally also sells its own hosted service, TallyPrime Cloud Access, from ₹600 per user a month plus GST. It needs your licence too, Mac users reach it through a browser, and Tally's FAQ says phones and tablets aren't supported. Our side-by-side comparison sets out the differences fairly.
The easiest way to judge is with your own books. Start a free 7-day trial, send us a copy of your Tally.ERP 9 data, and see the migrated company running on a cloud server before you change anything in the office.

Frequently asked questions
Is Tally.ERP 9 discontinued?
Not as software. Tally says Tally.ERP 9 will continue to work, but it gets no new features, and TSS renewal for it was discontinued for all customers from 16 August 2026. Once your current TSS term ends, you lose statutory updates and connected services such as e-invoicing, e-way bills and Remote Access. Tally's advice is to upgrade to TallyPrime and renew TSS there.
Can I keep using Tally.ERP 9 without TSS?
Yes. Tally's TSS FAQ says that when TSS expires you can still use Tally as before. What stops is the value-added layer: software upgrades, statutory updates, connected GST services and Remote Access. Your vouchers, reports and printing keep working. The risk is falling behind on tax changes, so treat Tally.ERP 9 as a stop-gap or a read-only archive rather than your long-term live books.
Is the upgrade from Tally.ERP 9 to TallyPrime free?
It is free if your Tally.ERP 9 TSS was active on or after 9 November 2020, the day TallyPrime launched, according to Tally's upgrade page. If your TSS expired before that date, the upgrade is paid. Check your licence and TSS validity in your Tally account, or with the partner who sold you the licence, before you plan the move.
Can I still renew Tally.ERP 9 TSS after 16 August 2026?
No. Tally discontinued TSS renewal on Tally.ERP 9 for all customers from 16 August 2026. To get updates and connected services again, you upgrade to TallyPrime and renew TSS on it. Tally's customer hub lists a one-year TSS renewal at ₹4,500 for Silver and ₹13,500 for Gold, plus 18% GST, with a discount for two years.
How do I move Tally.ERP 9 data to TallyPrime?
Back up the data first, then open it in the latest TallyPrime and choose Alt+Y, then Migrate (it is also under F1, Troubleshooting). TallyPrime keeps the original company and creates a new one with a six-digit number, and a long migration can be paused with Esc and resumed later. Compare the Migration Summary and trial balances afterwards; we do this with you during cloud onboarding.
Will I lose my Tally.ERP 9 data when I migrate?
Not if you follow Tally's process. The migration screen offers to back up the company before it starts, and the original five-digit company stays untouched while TallyPrime builds a new six-digit one. Don't force-stop a migration, because Tally warns that it might damage the data. Keep the backup and the original company afterwards as a read-only archive of past years.
Can I run Tally.ERP 9 on a cloud server?
Technically yes, and we can keep your old Tally.ERP 9 companies on your server as a read-only archive of past years. For live books we recommend TallyPrime, because statutory and connected-service updates now reach only TallyPrime. Moving to the cloud is a natural moment to upgrade: we restore your data on a private server, migrate it and check the trial balance with you.
