Tally on Cloud vs TallyPrime Server and Gold on a LAN

Tally gets slower as the team grows, or people start needing it away from the office, and someone says "buy the server". There are really three options, and they fix different problems. Compare them on three-year cost, users, speed and IT effort, with every assumption open to edit.

  • Keeps your existing Gold licence
  • TallyPrime Server on dedicated plans
  • Daily automated backups, 30-day retention
  • Starting from ₹799/month
Quick answer

Tally cloud vs Tally server: they fix different problems. TallyPrime Server (₹2,70,000 + GST, works with Gold) lets many people post to one company at once inside your office. Tally on Cloud moves TallyPrime and its data to a Windows server in India, so your team works from anywhere. Gold on a LAN often costs least when one office already owns an always-on PC and nobody works remotely.

Quick verdict

Three fixes for three different problems

Before comparing prices, name the problem. "Tally is slow when everyone saves at month-end" is a concurrency problem. "My accountant can't work from home" is an access problem. They have different answers.

Stay on Gold on a LAN

Right when everyone sits in one office, only a handful of people save vouchers at the same moment, and a reliable PC can stay switched on as the data host.

  • Lowest running cost if you already own the PC
  • Unlimited users on the LAN with one Gold licence
  • Stops at the office door: no Mac, phone or home access

Add TallyPrime Server

Right when ten or more people post to the same company at once, mostly from one site, and you have IT support to run a Windows Server properly.

  • Removes the one-request-at-a-time queue
  • Session monitoring and tighter control of data files
  • Doesn't add remote access on its own

Move to a cloud server

Right when people work from home, branches, a MacBook or a phone, or you'd rather not buy, back up and patch an office server at all.

  • One live company for every location and device
  • Backups, patching and power handled for you
  • Add TallyPrime Server on a dedicated server if needed

Option 2

TallyPrime Server: Tally's engine for busy Gold offices

TallyPrime Server is not a different edition of TallyPrime and not a cloud service. It is a separate product that works with a TallyPrime Gold licence and changes how company data is served. Tally's TallyPrime Server FAQ describes it as moving Gold from peer-to-peer data access over Windows file sharing to server-based data management, which speeds up concurrent access.

Tally pitches it at medium and large businesses with 10 or more employees working simultaneously. Beyond speed, it lets an administrator track user sessions and disconnect users, and it controls access to the data files. It costs ₹2,70,000 + GST at Tally's list price; our TallyPrime price guide sets it beside Silver, Gold, rental, TSS and TVU prices.

What Tally asks for on the server

  • Operating system: 64-bit Windows Server 2012 or later, so a Windows Server licence on top of the hardware.
  • Processor: 2 GHz 64-bit, Core i3 or i5 equivalent or better.
  • Storage: SSD or NVMe, with live data and scheduled backups on separate storage paths.
  • Client PCs: 8 GB RAM or more and SSD storage for smoother operation.

What it doesn't change

  • Where people can work. It still lives in your office. Home, branch and Mac users need a separate remote-access route.
  • Who looks after it. Someone still patches Windows Server, watches the service, tests backups and replaces the hardware.
  • A weak network. Clients still reach the server across your LAN, so slow switches and Wi-Fi still hurt.
Option 1

Gold on a LAN: one client request at a time

TallyPrime Gold allows unlimited users on a local area network. One PC holds the company data and the others open it over the network. It's simple and cheap, which is why most growing offices start here.

The catch is in Tally's own performance checklist: in multi-user mode, one client's request must be answered before the next client's request is processed. With three people that's invisible. With twelve people saving sales vouchers in the last week of the month, it becomes a queue.

Three limits worth knowing

  • The network must be fast. Tally wants ping between clients and the data PC under 5 ms, and recommends switches rather than hubs.
  • No LAN over VPN. Tally's licensing FAQ says the licence isn't supported on a LAN created by or connected through VPN, so a branch can't simply "join" the office network.
  • The data PC is a single point of failure. If it's off, crashed or on a dead UPS, nobody can work.

For staff outside the office, Tally offers Tally.NET Remote Access (it needs an active TSS and the office PC left on), and we compare every other route in Tally remote access: 5 options compared.

Before you spend ₹2,70,000, fix these

Much LAN slowness comes from the network or the data PC, not from Gold itself. Tally's performance guidance covers these basics:

  1. Measure ping from each client to the data PC; anything at 5 ms or more needs attention.
  2. Replace hubs and weak Wi-Fi links with wired switches running at a uniform speed.
  3. Put the data on an SSD and give the data PC enough memory for your company size.
  4. Exclude the Tally data folder and Tally.exe from antivirus scanning.
  5. Review and delete unused masters, which Tally says helps overall performance.
Option 3

Cloud server: everyone works on the data's own machine

On a Tally cloud server, TallyPrime and your company data sit on the same Windows server. Each person opens a Remote Desktop session on that server, so their TallyPrime reads the data from a local NVMe disk rather than across an office network. Only screen updates and keystrokes travel over the internet, not your data files.

That removes the LAN from the equation entirely: no ping targets, no switches, no data PC under someone's desk. It also means the accountant at home, the branch in another city and the owner on a MacBook all post into the same live company, which no amount of office hardware gives you.

Two honest caveats

  • Gold still handles writes the Gold way. The network hop disappears, but many people saving to one company at the same second still queue. Very busy teams add TallyPrime Server, below.
  • Remote sessions use Tally Virtual Users. LAN users don't, but every TallyPrime window opened over Remote Desktop does. Gold includes 10; extra packs cost ₹125 per user a month at Tally's list price, billed annually. See Tally Virtual User rules explained.

Microsoft also requires a Remote Desktop licence for every user of a Remote Desktop server. That's a real cost if you build your own; in our plans it's part of the price.

Hybrid

TallyPrime Server on a dedicated cloud server

When you need both concurrency and access from anywhere, run TallyPrime Server and TallyPrime together on one dedicated cloud server. Tally's hardware guide covers exactly this layout for Remote Desktop users: memory is RAM per TallyPrime window × users × windows each. Its example, 500 MB × 20 users × 2 windows, comes to about 20 GB before Windows Server's own share.

We run this on dedicated VMs and dedicated hosts for larger teams, sized from your data and confirmed in writing. You buy the TallyPrime Server licence from Tally or a partner. Tally's own TallyPrime Cloud Access also sells a Server Pack from ₹750 per user a month + GST; per Tally's FAQ it opens on a Mac only in a browser and doesn't support phones or tablets. We compare it fairly in TallyPrime Cloud Access vs Tally on Cloud.

    What the defaults show

With 12 people over 3 years, TallyPrime Server on-premises is the most expensive route by a wide margin, because the ₹2,70,000 licence and a Windows Server licence arrive on day one. Gold on a LAN is the cheapest on paper, but it's the only option with no access from outside the office. The cloud sits between them and is the only one that includes backups, power, patching and remote access in a single fee.

What's the same in all three

Your TallyPrime Gold licence (₹67,500 one-time, or ₹2,250 a month on rental) and TSS (₹13,500 a year for Gold) are needed whichever you choose, so they're left out of the totals. So are the computers, Macs or phones people work on. Add 18% GST to everything except electricity; GST-registered businesses can usually claim it back, so ask your CA.

    Speed

Which is faster? Test it on your own data

Any speed figure without the data size, user count and date behind it is marketing, so we don't print one here. What decides speed is well documented by Tally, and you can measure the difference yourself during a trial.

Factors that decide TallyPrime speed on a LAN, with TallyPrime Server, and on a cloud server
Speed factorGold on a LANTallyPrime ServerCloud server
Distance between TallyPrime and the dataAcross the office network; Tally asks for ping under 5 msAcross the office network to the serverNone: both on the same server
Many people saving at onceQueued, one request at a timeBuilt for concurrencyAs Gold, unless TallyPrime Server is added
Hardware doing the workWhichever PC holds the dataYour server; Tally recommends SSD or NVMevCPU, RAM and NVMe storage stated in your quote
Internet dependenceNone inside the office; the licence must go online once every 30 daysSame as the LANNeeded; only screen updates and keystrokes travel, so office broadband or 4G is enough
Large companiesBig masters, such as 20,000 stock items, raise memory use in every option. Clearing out unused masters, as Tally recommends, helps in all three.

A fair speed test in one afternoon

    1. Pick your heaviest company and the reports your team complains about: Day Book, Stock Summary, GST reconciliation.
    2. On your LAN, time a voucher save and each report while the usual number of people are working.
    3. During our free 7-day trial, we restore a copy of the same company to a cloud server.
    4. Repeat the same steps with the same number of people logged in, from the office and from home.
    5. Compare. If saves still queue at your peak, ask us to size TallyPrime Server on a dedicated plan.

Keep cloud sessions tidy. Tally's server performance guide says Remote Desktop users should sign out rather than just close the window, because a disconnected session keeps using server resources. Each open TallyPrime window also counts as one Tally Virtual User. Sources: Tally's TallyPrime Server performance guide and TVU FAQ.

    Decide in four steps

Tally on Cloud or Tally server? Work it out in order

Count people saving at your peak

Not total staff: the number posting vouchers at the same moment in the busiest week. Under about ten, TallyPrime Server is rarely the answer.

List who works outside the office

Owner on a Mac, accountant at home, a branch, a CA at audit time. If the list isn't empty, an office-only fix won't solve it.

Price all three with real quotes

Put your hardware, AMC and power numbers in the calculator above, plus Tally Virtual Users for remote sessions.

    Test on your own company

Run the speed test above during a free trial. We move your data and your Gold licence stays yours.

Choosing between cloud providers too? Ask whether your company gets its own server, what vCPU and RAM you're given in writing, whether Remote Desktop licences are included, and how long backups are kept. Our 12-point Tally on Cloud provider checklist covers the rest, and our security page shows how we protect your books.

    FAQ

Tally cloud vs Tally server: questions answered

Is Tally on Cloud better than buying TallyPrime Server?

They solve different problems. TallyPrime Server, which works with a Gold licence, lets many people post to the same company at the same moment without queuing. Tally on Cloud changes where TallyPrime runs, so your team can work from any office, home, Mac or phone on one copy of the data. If you need both, TallyPrime Server can run on a dedicated cloud server sized from your own data.

What is the difference between TallyPrime Gold and TallyPrime Server?

Gold is the multi-user TallyPrime licence: unlimited users on one local network for ₹67,500 + GST. TallyPrime Server is a separate data engine, ₹2,70,000 + GST, that works with Gold. Without it, Gold shares company data through Windows file sharing and serves one client's request at a time. With it, a server service manages the data for concurrent access and lets you monitor and disconnect user sessions.

When does a cloud server cost less than an office server?

Usually when you count everything: hardware replaced every four or five years, UPS batteries, Windows Server licences, backup drives, electricity, IT support and remote-access tools. A cloud server can also delay a TallyPrime Server purchase when your slowness comes from the office network rather than many people saving at once. A small office reusing an existing PC may save little, so every assumption in our calculator is editable.

Can TallyPrime Server run on a cloud server?

Yes. Tally's hardware guide asks for 64-bit Windows Server 2012 or later, SSD or NVMe storage and separate storage for live data and scheduled backups. When users connect over Remote Desktop, Tally sizes memory at about 500 MB per TallyPrime window, so 20 users with two windows each need around 20 GB. We run it on dedicated plans and give you the sizing in writing before you commit.

How many users do I need before TallyPrime Server is worth it?

Tally positions TallyPrime Server for medium and large businesses with 10 or more employees working simultaneously. The real trigger is simultaneous posting, not head count: ten people who mostly read reports may be fine on Gold, while a few billing clerks saving vouchers all day may not. Fix network basics first, such as ping under 5 ms and antivirus exclusions, then test with your own data.

Can branch staff use our office Gold licence over a VPN?

Not as LAN users. Tally's licensing FAQ says the licence supports computers on a LAN and is not supported for a LAN created by or connected through VPN. Remote staff can use Tally.NET Remote Access with an active TSS, or connect over Remote Desktop to a machine running TallyPrime, which uses Tally Virtual Users. Or move the company to a cloud server that everyone logs in to.

Will moving from a LAN to the cloud change my Tally licence costs?

Your Gold licence and TSS stay exactly the same. What changes is how users are counted: people on your office LAN don't use Tally Virtual Users, but every TallyPrime window opened over Remote Desktop does. Gold includes 10. Above that, Tally sells extra packs from ₹125 per user a month, billed annually, with volume discounts. Our calculator adds that cost to the cloud total for you.
