How to use Tally on Cloud — from sign-up to your first voucher

Here is the whole journey: what you do, what we do and what to expect, from the day you sign up to the moment you save your first voucher on a Mac, PC, iPad or phone. There are four steps. You install nothing except a free Remote Desktop app, and your Tally licence stays under your control.

  • Only a free Remote Desktop app on your device
  • You move your own licence
  • Private server in Mumbai
  • Most setups ready within one business day

Quick answer

How to use Tally on Cloud: choose a plan or free trial; we build a private Windows server in India with TallyPrime 7.1; you upload a backup of your companies and move your licence on a screen-share; then you log in with Microsoft's free Windows App (Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android) or Remote Desktop Connection (Windows).

Most setups are ready within one business day. Nothing else is installed on your computer or phone.

STEP 01 · YOU

Step 1: Choose a plan or start a free trial

Pick a plan on our Tally on Cloud pricing page (a private server for one user starts at ₹799/month + GST), or start the free 7-day trial with no card. Either way, sign-up is a short, verified form. You confirm your mobile number and e-mail, then give your business name, type, address and the reason you need the server.

We ask because India's CERT-In Directions of 28 April 2022 require data centres, VPS and cloud providers to record validated customer details and keep them for five years after the service ends. We collect only what those rules need.

Keep these handy for the setup call:

  • Your licence type. Silver, Gold or rental, and whether your TSS is active.
  • How many people use Tally at once. Tally counts each remote session as a Tally Virtual User: Silver includes 1 and Gold includes 10 (TVU rules explained).
  • Add-ons and printers. Any TDL files you load, and the make of your invoice printer.
STEP 02 · US

Step 2: We build your private server

While you carry on working in the office, we build a Windows Server virtual machine that only your business uses, in our Mumbai data centre. We install TallyPrime 7.1, the current release, and lock the server down:

  • Remote Desktop Gateway on port 443. The standard Remote Desktop port, 3389, is never open to the internet.
  • Two-factor login for every Windows user, plus Network Level Authentication.
  • Printer, folder and clipboard redirection switched on, so printing and exports work on day one.
  • Daily automated backups with 30-day retention, plus the antivirus exclusions Tally recommends for its data folder.

Most servers are ready within one business day. You then get a Windows username for each person, and a connection file or the server details for each device.

STEP 03 · TOGETHER

Step 3: Move your companies and your licence

This is the step people worry about, so we do it with you. The full walkthrough is in our guide to moving Tally data to the cloud. Here is the short version.

  1. Back up on your PC. Ask everyone to exit TallyPrime. Press Alt+Y (Data) › Backup & Restore › Backup (on release 6.2 or older, Alt+Y › Backup) and select all companies (Tally's backup guide).
  2. Upload it securely through the encrypted link we send, never by WhatsApp or e-mail.
  3. We restore and check. We restore every company and reload your TDLs. Data from Tally.ERP 9 or TallyPrime 2.1 and earlier is migrated to the current TallyPrime format on the server, and the original company is kept.
  4. You move the licence. On a screen-share, you type your own Tally.NET ID and password into TallyPrime's Reactivate License screen on the new server. We never ask for them.
  5. Match the numbers. Together we compare the Trial Balance, stock summary and voucher counts with your old PC. Then the old copy is made read-only so nobody posts there by mistake.

Tally's TallyPrime FAQ says reactivating on a new computer surrenders the licence from the old one automatically. You can also surrender it first via F1 › Settings › License › Manage License › Ctrl+F7.

STEP 04 · YOU

Step 4: Connect from your device

On Windows you install nothing. On every other device you install one free app:

  • Windows 10 or 11: Remote Desktop Connection, already built in.
  • Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android, Chromebook: Microsoft's free Windows App.
  • Linux: Remmina, a free open-source client.

Open the connection, enter your Windows username and password, and approve the two-factor prompt. TallyPrime opens. Then open your company with your usual TallyPrime user, exactly as before. Choose your device below for exact steps.

Step 4 in detail

How to access Tally on Cloud from your device

The server and the data are the same on every device. Only the app you open it with changes. Minimum versions come from the App Store and Google Play listings for Microsoft's apps, checked October 2026.

Windows: Remote Desktop Connection

  1. Double-click the connection file we send, or search the Start menu for Remote Desktop Connection.
  2. Enter your username and password, then approve the two-factor prompt.
  3. TallyPrime opens. Log in to your company and work exactly as you do today.

Your first day

Day one: printing, exports and users

Four things to set once on your first day. After that, Tally on Cloud feels like the TallyPrime you already know.

Printing invoices

On Windows and Mac, your own printers appear inside the session through Remote Desktop printer redirection, so the server needs no printer drivers. Press Ctrl+P in TallyPrime and pick your printer, marked "redirected". A Mac uses a generic driver, which suits laser and inkjet printers. Test dot-matrix or pre-printed stationery during your trial.

How to print from Tally on Cloud

Excel and PDF exports to your own device

In TallyPrime, press Alt+E › Configuration once and set the export folder to your computer's own drive, which shows up in the session as a redirected drive (for example \\tsclient\Downloads). From then on, Ctrl+E saves Excel or PDF files straight to your Mac or PC (Tally's export guide). On a phone, Ctrl+M e-mails the document to you instead.

Users and security levels

Each person gets their own Windows login. Don't share logins, because every open TallyPrime window uses a Tally Virtual User. Inside TallyPrime, the owner adds company users under Alt+K (Company) › Users and Passwords and gives each one a user role. That way an operator can post vouchers without seeing everything.

Teams and branches on one server

Shortcuts and connected services

TallyPrime's keyboard shortcuts work over Remote Desktop as they do on a PC. On a Mac a few keys map differently (Command acts as the Windows key), and our shortcut guide covers them. Connected GST, e-invoicing, e-way bills and Connected Banking work from the server once you log in to each service again, as long as your TSS is active.

Tally cloud shortcut keys

Three habits that keep things smooth. At the end of the day, sign out of Windows instead of just closing the window, as Tally's performance checklist recommends. Open TallyPrime only once per person, since each extra window uses another Tally Virtual User. And keep a normal broadband or 4G connection: our internet speed guide explains what is enough.

Under the hood

What happens behind the scenes

You see TallyPrime in a window. Underneath, your device sends only keystrokes and clicks and receives screen updates. Your company data files stay on the server; only the reports you export come to your device. New to the idea? Start with what Tally on Cloud is, and its limits.

  • Isolation. Your companies, your licence and TallyPrime sit on one server that only your business uses. Tally requires the licence and the data to be on the same virtual machine. Its licensing rules also forbid sharing one licence across businesses, and we never do.
  • A gateway in front. Every session passes through an encrypted Remote Desktop Gateway with two-factor login. The full control list is on our Tally on Cloud security page.
  • Backups. Daily automated backups, kept away from the server with 30-day retention. You can always take your own backup too.
  • TallyPrime updates with your TSS. When Tally ships a new release, we agree a time with you, back up first and check your add-ons before updating. Updates need an active TSS.
  • Windows patching and monitoring. We patch and watch the server against a 99.9% uptime target, set out in our service level agreement.

Want to host TallyPrime yourself? You would need a Windows Server, a Microsoft Remote Desktop licence for each user, a gateway, backups and patching. Our comparison of Tally on AWS, Azure and Oracle walks through what that involves.

FAQ

Questions about using Tally on Cloud

How do I start using Tally on Cloud?

Choose a plan or start the free 7-day trial and complete a short verified sign-up. We build a private Windows server in India with TallyPrime 7.1. You upload a backup of your companies, we restore them, and on go-live day you reactivate your licence yourself over a screen-share. Then install Microsoft's free Windows App, or use Remote Desktop Connection on Windows, and log in.

How do I log in to Tally on Cloud?

Open Windows App on a Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android phone or Chromebook, or Remote Desktop Connection on Windows, and select the connection we set up for you. Enter your Windows username and password, approve the two-factor prompt, and TallyPrime opens on your server. Then open your company with your usual TallyPrime user. On Linux, use Remmina with the same details.

How long does Tally on Cloud setup take?

Most servers are ready within one business day once your sign-up is verified. Moving live data can take longer, depending on the number and size of your companies, any TDL add-ons, and whether Tally.ERP 9 data must first be migrated to TallyPrime. We can schedule the final cut-over and licence move outside your working hours, so nobody loses a working day.

Do I need to install TallyPrime on my own computer?

No. We install TallyPrime 7.1 on your cloud server, so the only thing on your device is a free Remote Desktop app: Windows App on Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android and Chromebook, Remote Desktop Connection (already built into Windows), or Remmina on Linux. That is why a MacBook, which cannot run TallyPrime itself, opens the same company data as a Windows PC.

Will you ask for my Tally.NET ID and password?

No. Your licence belongs to your business, so we never ask for, type or store your Tally.NET login. On go-live day we join a screen-share and you type it yourself into TallyPrime's Reactivate License screen on your new server. Tally's FAQ says that reactivating on a new computer automatically surrenders the licence from the old one.

Tally ko cloud kaise banaye?

Pehle TallyPrime mein Alt+Y (Data) se apni sabhi companies ka backup lijiye aur hamare encrypted upload link par bhejiye. Hum aapke private Windows server par data restore karke check karte hain. Go-live ke din screen-share par aap khud apna licence reactivate karte hain. Phir Mac, mobile ya Chromebook par Microsoft ka free Windows App, ya Windows PC par Remote Desktop Connection kholiye aur login kijiye.
